Phantom power & polarity
Some microphones need power to work at all. And when two mics point at one source, one of them may need flipping so they don't cancel each other out. The full explanation → Guide, Step 3
The short version
- MUTE the channel first — always
- SELECT the channel · HOME → Config tab
- +48V on for condensers and active DIs; off for dynamics and ribbons
- Ø only when two mics share one source
- Unmute
Every time. No exceptions.
Switching phantom power on or off sends a thump through the system that is loud, ugly, and in a full room genuinely alarming. Worse, applying phantom to a ribbon microphone can destroy it — that's a repair bill, not an inconvenience.
Mute the channel, make the change, wait a second, unmute. It costs you nothing.
Which mics need +48V?

Not sure what you've got? Phantom on a dynamic mic is harmless — they ignore it. Phantom on a ribbon mic is not. So the rule is: if you don't know whether it's a ribbon, find out before switching anything on. Everything you're likely to meet on a worship stage is a condenser or a dynamic, and Our Setup should list which is which.
Step by step — phantom power

Mute the channel.
Press MUTE on that channel strip. Yes, even if the fader is down.

Select it and open Config.
Press SELECT, then HOME, then the Config tab.

Toggle +48V.
The phantom control is on this page. Switch it on for condensers and active DIs.

Wait a moment, then unmute.
Condensers take a second or two to power up and settle. Let it stabilize before you unmute, or you'll hear it come alive.

Confirm.
Solo the channel and check you have signal. A condenser with no phantom is silent or nearly so — if a mic is mysteriously dead, this is the first thing to check.
Step by step — polarity (Ø)
Polarity flips the waveform upside down. You only need it when two mics are capturing the same source — a snare miked top and bottom, or a bass amp with both a mic and a DI.
Why it matters: two mics pointing at the same thing from different positions can arrive slightly out of step, and where one pushes the other pulls. The result is thin, hollow, missing low end. Flipping one of them fixes it.

Get both channels up
and have the source played steadily.

Listen to the low end
with both channels open.

Flip Ø on one of them.

Keep whichever sounds fuller.
That's the whole test — no theory required. If flipping makes the low end bloom, leave it flipped. If it makes things worse, flip it back.
Common cases where you'll want it flipped: the bottom snare mic (it faces the opposite direction from the top mic, so it almost always needs it), and sometimes a bass DI + amp mic blend.
What good looks like

If it goes wrong
- A mic is completely dead.
- If it's a condenser, check +48V before anything else. This is the single most common cause.
- A loud thump went through the PA.
- Phantom was switched with the channel live. No damage done to the console — just mute first next time.
- Snare or bass sounds thin and hollow with both mics up.
- Classic polarity problem. Flip Ø on one of the two and listen again.
- Phantom is on but the mic is still dead.
- Move down the chain: cable, patch, routing. No sound / no signal →
