Do it on the X32 · Step 2

Name & color a channel

Why am I doing this?

A wall of identical gray channels is how you turn up the wrong thing at the worst moment. Thirty seconds of labeling saves real pain later. The full explanation → Guide, Step 2

The short version

Already know the drill?
  1. SELECT the channel
  2. HOMEConfig tab
  3. Set name, icon, color with the encoders
  4. Repeat for every channel you're using
  5. Save the scene

Before you start

Step by step

  1. Select the channel.

Press SELECT on the channel strip you're labeling.

  2. Open its config.

Press the HOME screen-select button, then navigate to the Config tab. This is where a channel's identity lives.

  3. Set the name.

Use the encoders beneath the display to enter a short name. Short is the point — the scribble strip is tiny, and you're reading it at a glance in bad light.

Good: Kick · Lead Vox · Gtr SR · Pastor · Tracks L
Less good: Lead Vocal Mic 1 — it'll truncate and you'll lose the useful part.

  4. Pick a color.

Color is how you find a group of channels without reading anything. Group by role so your eye can jump straight to what it needs. One workable scheme:

    ColorGroup
    RedDrums
    YellowBass
    GreenGuitars
    CyanKeys / pads
    WhiteWorship vocals
    MagentaSpeaking mics
    BlueTracks / playback

Whatever you choose, be consistent — the value is entirely in the pattern being the same every week. Record the scheme in Our Setup.

  5. Pick an icon.

The icon does the same job as color, faster. There's a mic, a guitar, a drum, a keyboard, and so on. Pick the obvious one and move on — this isn't worth deliberating over.

  6. Move to the next channel.

Press SELECT on the next one and repeat. With practice this is a few seconds per channel.

  7. Save the scene.

Names, colors, and icons all live in the scene. Scenes & backup →

What good looks like

CheckShould be
Every channel in usenamed
Namesshort enough to read at a glance
Colorsgrouped by role, same scheme every week
Unused channelsnamed or left obviously blank — never mislabeled
Scenesaved

That last one matters more than it sounds. A channel labeled "Acoustic" that's actually the pastor's mic is worse than a channel labeled nothing at all.

If it goes wrong

Names are there but the scribble strips look wrong.
Check you're looking at the right fader layer — the same physical strip shows different channels depending on the layer button you have lit.
Someone relabeled everything differently.
Recall your saved scene rather than re-typing it all. That's what scenes are for. Scenes & backup →
